Adjust your speakers and listen to this podcast episode about cutting onions without crying:

Listen to all my podcasts

If you are like me, you hate cooking with onions.

Because cutting onions produce endless tears.

A knife cut leads to the creation of an irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide.

This irritant stimulates our eyes’ lachrymal glands.

And this release tears.

The best tear-free tricks to cutting onions without crying is simple:

First, I always keep my knife sharp.

A dull knife crushes onion slices which releases more irritants.

But my #1 secret to no tears-onion cutting is to freeze onions for 20 minutes.

Because chilling onions before chopping them reduces the amount of irritants.

If chilling is not an option, wearing goggles would fit the bill.
